What It Takes — Day 4 :: MORE visual vibes
As I shared last week, today was my deadline for having the visual vibes of the next issue nailed down, so that's what I've been working on!
I'm not gonna lie — for some reason pulling this issue together has been challenging at times, but when I sit down and throw on some music, and take the time to work on the VISUALS for any project, that's when shit gets back in the zone for me. Photography curation is genuinely one of my favourite things to do (I also find it super fucking chill and relaxing?), so the majority of today has been me scouting actual stock photos I can use in the issue — not just 'inspo' images.
The other day I shared these quick snaps of the inspo + vibes I had at the time, but I spent a bit of time expanding on that. To me, I really HAVE to feel the visuals of something for me to be super stoked on it and to actually want to do the work — so this part of the process is super important to me and it's also one of my fave parts. I'm kinda anal about cohesiveness and bringing things together both visually, but also just how it fucking FEELS. It's not something I can easily explain — as it's literally just me thinking about the vibe of the magazine, this issue, and how I want people to feel when they're reading it.
So far the visuals of this issue are looking a little bolder than the last print issue, and I'm keen to play around with more layers in the designs too... I'm all about those layers man. Here's a couple snaps of my updated inspo + photo process!
Stock photos :: All of the stock photos you see here are from Unsplash and Stocksy. This selection isn't final but I'm fucking loving where it's going. I want to find more photos of people or groups of friends, and maybe some more landscape/nature photos, but I think this is a pretty good start. I used to be a hater of the colour pink for a while, but I'm into it lately, as you can see from this selection, haha.
Design vibes :: I just quickly pulled together some more images that are kinda along the lines of what I'm going for... As I mentioned, I'm all about the layers and I want to play around with more layered and imperfect type this time too. My Design Pinterest board is over here if you wanna peep.
Photo edits :: I love this part of the process so much. I'm playing around with some glitch-style effects for some of the photos, and I'll continue to do that as I actually start designing the issue and seeing what works and what doesn't.
Layout ideas :: I just grabbed some random magazines I had lying around and drew out these page layouts. Usually most of my layouts happen when I'm actually designing and working in InDesign, I'll just move shit around and see how it goes down... So maybe I'll take some screengrab videos to share when I get stuck into that?!
Okay okay... That's all I got for today fam! Now that I'm feeling super good about the visuals it's time to get into the bloody CONTENT for this thing, so I actually have some shit to design with haha.
Whatcha think of this 'What It Takes' series so far?!
