What It Takes — Day 15 :: More designing + getting the visuals down
Today in the world of The Unmistakable Effect I've mostly been jamming on more of what I was doing yesterday... So mapping out the content and starting to place in photos and gather up inspo for page design. My main design document is still looking kinda basic, but I grabbed some screenshots for ya! Check em below.
I've also been thinking about dividing the magazine into some more structured 'sections', which isn't something I've done much before because I don't think it really needed it, but with this issue looking to be at least 120 pages I reckon it'd be a rad idea. I think once I actually get more of the final content in the magazine and I can look at themes in each piece I'll be able to divide it up and separate the pieces more easily, so I'mma wait and see how it looks.
The other day I picked up a copy of the Goop magazine at the book store, and honestly the design was hella smooth. I really dug their 'sections' too — SUPER basic, but still interesting and cool. I didn't buy it but I grabbed a quick snap on my phone of the contents page —
But anyway, here's the screenshots of the design feels! They might not look like much but this is probably my favourite part of the whole process — pulling everything together. Something I never really thought about too much was the CURATION aspect of running a magazine, and it's something I got a lot of love for, and I think I'm not totally shit at it... Whether its photos, content, interviews, writers, I love setting a tone and then pulling things together to fit that vibe. 🙏
Something I'm also having fun playing around with for this issue is drawing over the top of photos, like you can kinda see in the first image below. I think it looks cool and it's not something I've done a lot in past issues... So keep ya eyes peeled for more of it. 🤗
